Ask Walt

Walt has answered roughly four hundred thousand questions at this counter. Here are six of the usual ones, with the parts to match. Add them in one tap.

01

My toilet keeps running

โฑ๏ธ 30 min๐Ÿ‘ Easy๐Ÿ’ง Dept. D
  1. Shut the valve under the tank, then flush to empty it.
  2. Unscrew the supply line and the big lock nut, and lift the old fill valve out.
  3. Set the new one so its top sits an inch above the overflow tube. Hand-tight plus a quarter turn.
  4. Reconnect, open the valve slowly, flush twice. Listen for the hiss to stop.
Parts: PL-4012 fill valve, PL-4511 supply line. About $18.

02

Measure twice, mark once

โฑ๏ธ 5 min๐Ÿ‘ Easy๐Ÿ“ Dept. A
  1. Hook the tape on the board's end and pull it flat and tight.
  2. Mark a sharp pencil V, not a line. The point is the measurement.
  3. Cut on the waste side so the mark stays on your board.
  4. The hook slides on purpose: its play equals its own thickness.
Parts: HT-1207 tape measure, 25 ft.
Four metal combination wrenches arranged in a row on a rustic wooden board.
03

The bolt won't budge

โฑ๏ธ 10 min๐Ÿ‘ Easy๐Ÿ”ง Dept. A
  1. A drop of penetrating oil, then go and make a coffee for ten minutes.
  2. Use the closed end of the wrench. It grips all six sides.
  3. Push with the heel of your hand. Pull and you'll skin a knuckle.
  4. Still stuck? Tighten a hair first, then loosen.
Parts: HT-1122 wrench set, 8 piece.
04

Don't paint below 50°F

โฑ๏ธ A weekendโ›‘๏ธ Moderate๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ Dept. C
๐ŸŒก๏ธ50ยฐF50ยฐF

Interior latex wants the air and the wall at 50°F or warmer.

  1. Run the heat a day ahead and crack a window an inch for the fumes.
  2. Tape the trim, and peel the tape while the paint is still wet.
  3. Two thin coats beat one heavy one. Wait four hours between.
Parts: PA-3001 paint, PA-3102 roller kit, PA-3205 tape.
05

Winterize the hose bib

โฑ๏ธ 20 min๐Ÿ‘ Easyโ„๏ธ Before frost
  1. Unscrew the hose, drain it, and coil it indoors.
  2. Shut the inside valve that feeds the outside spigot, then open the spigot to drain.
  3. Wrap the spigot in frost cloth and tie it off.
  4. Leave the outside spigot open a crack so trapped water can expand.
Parts: GD-6514 frost cloth, 20% off this week.
06

Hang a heavy mirror on drywall

โฑ๏ธ 25 minโ›‘๏ธ Moderate๐Ÿ”ฉ Dept. G
  1. Knock for the studs, then mark them with painter's tape.
  2. No stud where you need it? Use anchors rated for twice the mirror's weight.
  3. Drill the pilot holes, set the anchors, and drive the screws until snug.
  4. Hang it, then check it with a level before you let go.
Parts: FS-7305 anchors, PT-2105 bit set.

Pennock Falls has been fixing things here since 1952

Harold Hartwell opened with one counter, six kegs of nails and a hand-lettered sign. His sons Walt and Ray joined the counter and the sign got longer. Today Walt's daughter Meg runs the books and her brother Tom runs the yard, and Walt still takes the questions nobody else can answer.

We sponsor the Pennock Falls Hammers, we run the Saturday fix-it clinic at the back bench, and we've never charged a neighbor for advice.

  1. 1952 Harold opens at 214 Canal Street with a counter and six kegs of nails.
  2. 1974 Walt, aged seventeen, starts behind the counter. The first of four hundred thousand questions.
  3. 1979 Ray joins. The sign gets painted: Hartwell & Sons.
  4. 1996 The paint counter and key machine arrive. The line gets longer.
  5. 2008 Meg and Tom take over the books and the yard.
  6. 2026 The web shop opens. The phone still rings first.
