Kids don't grow on a schedule, so our coats and dungarees don't have a fixed length. Here's what's built in.
Rolled three times at 3, twice at 4, once at 5, and let right out at 6. Reflective piping stays visible either way.
Dungaree and satchel straps move with the shoulders, no sewing and no spare buttons.
Every seam is sealed, so the water stays outside even when the puddle is above the knee.
40 degrees, tumble on low, and ready for the next hand-me-down. Made with 78% recycled polyester*.

The cuffs let out exactly as promised and the hood stays up in a proper wind. We bought a 4Y when he was three and it's just starting to fit like a coat instead of a tent.

Coats and dungarees have cuffs, hems and straps that lengthen by about two sizes. Pick the size for their height today (or one up if you want room) and the adjustments take care of the next year or so.
Seams are taped and the fabric is coated, with an 8,000 mm rating in our (fictional) lab. For a day of full-on puddle stomping, that's plenty. Boots should be dried upside down on the stairs, as per tradition.
Yes. 40 degrees, no fabric softener (it clogs the coating), and low tumble or line dry. Re-proof the coat once a year with a wash-in proofer.
