Utsav or Rangoli: which Diwali style should you pick?
Both are holiday styles made for Indian festivals, and both are rich styles with gentle gradients. They feel quite different, though:
| Utsav style | Rangoli style | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Hand-crafted: marigold and saffron, plum outline, gold inner line, rangoli dots | Modern and premium: each object in its own colours, warm glow, one festival motif |
| Feels | Traditional, warm, celebratory | Clean, polished, never kitsch |
| Best for | Greetings, wedding cards, restaurants, melas, cultural events | Brand campaigns, app themes, festive sales, Durga Puja and Holi |
| Live demo | Rangoli Square Diwali Mela | Diwali at the Mehta House |
A simple rule: if your brand is playful or traditional, start with Utsav. If it is a modern app or a premium shop, start with Rangoli.
Where do Diwali icons work best?
Greetings and social posts
One large diya or a rangoli pattern makes a calm, beautiful greeting on its own. Add your name and a short wish, and you have a WhatsApp or Instagram post that does not look like every other template.
Festive sales and shop pages
Use a few icons in a “Diwali offers” banner: a mithai box for sweets, a diya for home decor, a sparkler for limited-time deals. Everyday icons work in the festive styles too, so delivery dates and gift cards can match.
Invitations and menus
Our two live demos are real Diwali pages you can explore: Diwali at the Mehta House is a family Lakshmi Puja dinner invitation in the Rangoli style, and Rangoli Square Diwali Mela is a neighbourhood festival with food stalls, garba and fireworks in the Utsav style.
Pick one festive style for the whole greeting or campaign, and keep text short so the icon has room to glow.
Mix Utsav, Rangoli and three other styles on one card. Each is lovely alone; together they compete.
Do the Diwali icons move?
Several have their own small animation: the diya flame flickers, the sky lantern sways, the sparkler glows. Hover over or tap the tiles to see them. On a website the free motion package plays them, and they stay still for anyone who prefers reduced motion.
How do you change the colours?
Each icon has 20 to 30 ready-made palettes. The diya, for example, comes as a Terracotta diya, a Painted red diya, a Brass diya, a Silver diya, Gilded clay and Jaipur blue pottery. Pick one on the icon page before you copy or download, and use the same palette across your design.
How do you use Utsav icons in slides, Canva or a website?
You do not need an account or any design software. Every icon has its own page with buttons to copy it or download it, and every page lets you switch to the Utsav style first.
- 1Open the icon
Search the library for what you need (try “diya”), or open the diya page directly.
- 2Pick the style
Choose Utsav in the style picker. If you want different colours, pick one of the icon’s ready-made palettes.
- 3Copy or download
Press Copy image to paste it straight into a slide or chat, Download PNG for a picture with a see-through background, or Download SVG for a file that stays sharp at any size.
- 4Drop it in
Paste or drag it onto your Canva design, Google Slides or PowerPoint slide. Our Canva guide shows each click.
If you build websites, the same icons ship on npm. The holiday styles live in their own package, @withicons/holiday, and the React components import by name from the style you want:
npm i @withicons/react
import { Diya, RangoliPattern } from '@withicons/react/utsav'
<Diya size={48} />
Or skip the install and point an image at the CDN copy of the SVG. The developer docs cover Vue, Svelte, Angular, web components and CSS classes too.
<img src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/@withicons/holiday@latest/dist/svg/utsav/diya.svg" width="48" height="48" alt="diya">
What other festivals does with icons cover?
Diwali sits between Halloween and Christmas. After that come Lunar New Year and Valentine’s Day. Our holiday and festival icon guide puts the dates in one calendar, the demo gallery shows every festive style on real pages, and the quick Diwali icons page has a style picker.
Frequently asked questions
When is Diwali in 2026?
Diwali, the main day with Lakshmi Puja, is on Sunday 8 November 2026. The five days run from Dhanteras on Friday 6 November to Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November. Puja times vary by city, so check a local panchang.
Are these Diwali icons free for business use?
Yes. All 750 icons are MIT licensed: free for personal and commercial use, including products you sell, with no credit required. Shops, sweet makers, restaurants and apps can use them in offers and greetings.
What is the difference between the Utsav and Rangoli styles?
Utsav looks hand-crafted: warm marigold and saffron shapes, a plum outline, a fine gold inner line and rangoli dot-work. Rangoli is cleaner and more modern: each object keeps its own colours in a warm glow and gets one small festival motif such as petals, a lotus, a toran or a diya flame.
Can I use the same icons for Holi or Durga Puja?
Yes. The Indian festivals set also has a dhak, a pandal, alpana, a pichkari, gulal and a water balloon. The Rangoli style has palettes for Durga Puja and Holi, so one set can carry you through the festival year.
Can I send these icons on WhatsApp?
Yes. Download a PNG (512px is plenty), then share it like any picture, or place it on a greeting card design in Canva first.
